Car Insurance Lexus (Car Insurance). car battery drain from amp?

car battery drain from amp? Hey people. I was very happy to install my new amp on my (very old) 89 camry. I checked and re-checked all the connections on the amp: (2 channel 150wx1 peak @1800w, with two 12" 300 rms 1200w peak) 1) Positive battery (with fuse box for 60 amps on a 8AWG) to 12v input on amp and remote wire to its respective lead on the amp. 2)Ground wire was bolted on sand papared chassis part also 8AWG. 3)Power and remote wire run on the right side of the car and RCA cables from head unit to amp run on the left side. Issue: amp shuts off after at least 20 mins use and car does not turn on most of the time (easy to jump start since it's manual). I do notice that I have dimming lights at night. Would the big 3 help with that? like running 4awg wire to do it this. Please remember that it's a very old car and has a very tampered electrical system. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Big 3 would help, but if you are running a weak alternator it might not do much, so you might need to get a better alternator. if adding a new alternator and big 3 doesn't still help... You will need to add a separate car audio battery just for the sub woofers... I did it in my Jeep liberty. I find that smaller cars have weaker alternators as my Jeep Liberty came stock with a 136 amp alternator so I just had to to do the Big 3, and add a battery and a thing called a volt stabilizer and grounding kit (I got it more for performance but for $70 it was great and also fixed the dimming in my gauges and lights) My advice if the car wont start first thing is a new car battery with the most CCA you can fit in, new alternator, then the big 3, then a dedicated car audio battery. I have a stock 136 amp alternator, with a 850CCA car battery, then shuriken 20AH 850 CCA car audio battery, and a Raizin Voltage stabilizer and ground kit. I recommend a Optima yellow top battery the most otherwise the best battery at autozone or etc. might do I got mine from O'Reilly's and it is great for my car when my stock battery kicked the bucket. You may need higher amperage alternator and bigger battery (cold cranking amperage CCA). I would check the alternator rating. Many times when aftermarket amplifiers are added it causes a huge burden on the charging system. The "stock" alternator is usually sized just large enough to supply current for "normal" accessories. The rated current of the alternator is usually stamped somewhere on the body of the alternator. Is this correct: Peak = 1800w + 1200w = 4000w? If so, then using Power = Volts x Current, or P = VI The required additional output current is i = P/V = 4000w/12V = 333 Amps That seems a bit high though! Look on the amplifier and see what the peak current rating is (if supplied), then add that to the rating of your stock alternator to determine the required rating for a new alternator. Good Luck! check your ground weak ground will put a strain on charging

Lexus . Information on Repairing Chevy Cavalier Brakes

The Chevy Cavalier was introduced by General Motors in 1982 as its premiere compact car. Despite a few generational redesigns, the braking system on the Cavalier remained virtually unchanged. The Cavalier features front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Since the front brakes work three times harder than the rear, they required more service. The rear drum brakes are comprised of many intricate parts and require a level of skill to repair.
Front Disc Brakes
Before servicing the Cavalier brakes, siphon half of the brake fluid from the master cylinder and replace the cap. In order for the new brake parts to fit, the hydraulic piston of the caliper needs to be retracted and this action will reverse the flow of the brake fluid into the master cylinder. A large C-clamp works well and can be placed over the caliper assembly with the pads and caliper intact to the knuckle. Retract the piston before attempting to remove the caliper.
The two caliper mounting bolts and sleeves need to be removed next. Once the caliper is free, support it to the coil spring with a hook or wire. This will prevent damage from occurring to the rubber brake hose. Unseat the outboard pad dowels from the caliper to remove the pad. A common screwdriver can convince the pad off. The inboard pad clips into the center of the caliper piston and can be pulled out of its seated position.
Clean the caliper-to-pads contact points thoroughly to remove corrosion and rust. This includes the caliper mount on the knuckle of the car. Once finished, apply a coating of brake lubricant or anti-seize compound to assist the pads in sliding. This includes the sleeves of the caliper mounting bolts when it comes time to reinstall them.
If replacing the rotor, remove the rotor and clean the hub flange thoroughly with an angled die grinder and a reconditioning disk.
Reinstall the new parts by reversing the procedure.
Always pump the brake pedal until firm after the repairs are complete and before attempting to drive. This will extend the pistons of the caliper to their original position and seat the new pads to the rotors. Check and adjust the level of the brake fluid again in the master cylinder, but only add new brake fluid.
Rear Drum Brakes
Rear drum brakes work by a smaller hydraulic component called a wheel cylinder. The internal pistons on each side of the cylinder extend when demand is placed on the brakes. This pushes the outboard and inboard shoes outward to contact the interior diameter of the drum. Removing the drum can be the first challenge. Tap it convincingly with a hammer to convince it off of the hub flange. In extreme cases, the brake adjustment will need to be taken down to remove the drum.
The shoes are held in place by several springs and clips. In addition, their placement retains the self-adjusting mechanism and integrates the parking brake cable. Because of all the parts involved, it is a good idea to remove both drums, but leave one side intact for a reference before replacing. Special tools such as a set of brake shoe pliers and a brake spring tool will make disengaging the springs easier and safer. The parking brake strut and spring also need to be removed from the parking brake shoe and then reinstalled on the replacement shoe. The self-adjusting mechanism should be taken apart, cleaned and then lubricated along the threads.
It is also recommended to replace the springs and hardware in the rear braking system. For a few dollars more, you can ensure the hardware and springs will apply the proper tension necessary for the rear braking system.
Once the shoes are in place and all the hardware intact, replace the drum and then adjust the shoes outward to contact the drum slightly. There should be a degree of drag on the drum so it cannot rotate a full revolution when spun by hand.

Lexus . Auto Disk Brake Repair Information

Disc brakes are the most common brake type used on passenger cars and light trucks today. Repairing this system is a straightforward operation, but there are a few caveats of information to be aware of. The system consists of a disc brake caliper, rotor (or disc), brake pads and anti-rattle clips called hardware.
Calipers
The caliper is the hydraulic portion of the system and provides the clamping force needed to slow or stop your vehicle. It is made up of the housing, caliper piston, square-cut seal and dust boot.

The square-cut seal is the key to proper disc brake function. As the brake is applied, the seal flexes with the pistons movement. When the brake is released, the seal straightens back up and pulls the piston partially back into the bore of the housing. This eliminates rubbing of the pads on the rotors and premature wear of the pads. However, over time the seal becomes hard from normal heat cycling, and even though it may not leak, it will not flex the way it should. Premature pad wear can occur because of this. The simple fix for this problem is to replace or rebuild calipers with every brake job performed.
Rotors
The brake rotors (or discs) are the round metal disc-shaped parts that the caliper clamps the pads onto to slow the vehicle.

Common problems associated with rotors include noise and vibrations caused by warp. This warp is commonly called run out and can be eliminated by resurfacing the rotors. There are minimum thickness specifications for every rotor that must be followed when resurfacing. Machining requires removal of metal, and after the metal is removed, the rotor must still be thicker than the minimum. If not, at some point during the life of the pads, the rotor will be thinner than is safe to use.
Hardware
There are three types of hardware used in disc brakes, but they all serve the same purpose. The purpose is to isolate and absorb vibration. When vibration occurs in the disc brake system, noises like squealing and rattling occur as well.

The three types used are slide shims that give the pad a smooth hard surface to move on, the pad shim that sticks or clips to the pad and isolates it from the caliper, and the spring clip that mounts between the caliper housing and the pads to absorb vibrations. Replacement hardware should be used from time to time to restore their function as they wear.
Pads
Brake pads come in three varieties on passenger cars and light trucks.

The organic brake pad is used on older cars. These pads are made up of particles of bronze and organic material like asbestos and carbon. These pads work in a lower relative heat range than the others. Some rear disc brake applications use the organic compounds as well.

The semi-metallic brake pad is made up of bronze, as well as other metals and manmade fibers like aramid and Kevlar. The ability of these pads to operate at a higher heat range is why they are used on the downsized brake systems of late model cars.

Many newer cars use a ceramic pad, and replacement pads of this design are available for most applications. Their advantage is the high heat they can withstand and quiet operation. Brake dust is reduced but not eliminated, and the dust these pads generate is light gray in color, so it does not show as bad as the dark black dust of the semimetallic.
Summary
Understanding these few things about disc brakes will go a long way in helping to keep your brake system functioning as it was designed to.
